Overnight: Mayfair Hotel or similar
Depart Adelaide this morning on a private aircraft for a spectacular flight north to Coober Pedy. Explore this colourful frontier township and learn of its interesting origins and lifestyle, most of the locals having built their homes underground to escape the scorching summer temperatures. This afternoon, we will enjoy a tour of Coober Pedy including an underground home and church, the opal fields, a former opal mine and the majestic arid scenery of The Breakaways. Tonight’s accommodation is at the famous Desert Cave Hotel.
Overnight: Desert Cave Hotel or similar
Appreciate the unique landscape of this region as we board our charter aircraft heading for our lunch stop at William Creek. Reboard the aircraft to enjoy spectacular aerial sightseeing as we ‘flightsee’ the natural wonder that is Lake Eyre (Kati Thanda), a fascinating Australian Outback saltpan, a natural wonder! After landing at Leigh Creek, transfer to Parachilna and the well known Prairie Hotel, the location for many famous movies including Gallipoli, The Lighthorseman and Rabbit Proof Fence.
Overnight: Prairie Hotel or similar
Following breakfast, we visit Nilpinna Cattle Station which sits north of William Creek on the Oodnadatta Track. Currently running 4,500 head of cattle, this working station has a long and fascinating history dating back to 1875. Today we learn why the area around Parachilna is so remarkable and important to geological history. In 1946, geologist Reginald Sprigg discovered fossil imprints in rocks at the old Ediacara Mine. These fossils preserve an entire ecosystem and are unlike any creature alive today. Continue on to the township of Beltana for a private tour of this State heritage listed town before lunch at the Royal Victoria Hotel.
Overnight: Prairie Hotel or similar
The journey continues by air from Leigh Creek to the majesty of the Flinders Ranges. The Flinders are an insight into the depth of Australia’s geological history, extending back more than a billion years, with long-disappeared mountain ranges, beaches, tidal flats, reefs and glacial moraines – the evidence remains in the rocks to this day. A highlight of today is Wilpena Pound as we view it from above then up close while touring.
The Pound rises as an immense, crater-like fusion of stark purple ridges and overhanging blues, strewn with tough and colourful vegetation, in jarring contrast to the flatness of the surrounding plains. Check in to Rawnsley Park and enjoy a tour of Old Wilpena Station and Cazneux Tree. Rawnsley Park Station provides the perfect base for exploring South Australia’s spectacular Flinders Ranges.
Overnight: Rawnsley Park Station or similar
Today, explore the breathtaking sights of Flinders Ranges National Park. Marvel at the rugged beauty of Brachina and Bunyeroo Gorges. Search for Yellow Footed Rock Wallabies and enjoy sweeping views of Bunyeroo Valley.
Visit an old copper mining town following lunch before enjoying spectacular 360 degree panoramas of Wilpena Pound and the surrounding awe-inspiring ranges. Relax on the deck at your beautiful accommodation this evening and toast the magnificent sunset in this incredible corner of South Australia.
Overnight: Rawnsley Park Station or similar
More spectacular aerial views await this morning as we fly to Gawler in the Barossa Valley. Upon arrival, visit famed author and restaurateur Maggie Beer’s Farmshop to enjoy an interactive cooking demonstration and lunch.
The wineries of the Barossa receive world acclaim. A visit to the area would not be complete without sampling the local produce and for those who aren’t interested in wines, the gardens at each of the wineries are a delight to explore. Transfer to our multi-award-winning luxury accommodation for two nights, Mt Lofty House, voted Number One Luxury Hotel in Australia, elegantly set overlooking the Adelaide Hills.
Overnight: Mt Lofty House or similar
We begin the day with a visit to the charming town of Hahndorf, the jewel of the Adelaide Hills. Considered one of South Australia’s most popular towns to visit, Hahndorf was originally a farming village of Lutheran settlers and is classified as Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement. Following lunch in Hahndorf, we enjoy a tour of The Cedars house and garden, Australia’s oldest viewable artist’s studio.
Our Farewell Dinner this evening is at the award-winning and much acclaimed Hardy’s Verandah, a three hat fine dining restaurant.
Overnight: Mt Lofty House or similar
After a leisurely breakfast this morning, transfer to the airport for your return flight home. We say a fond farewell to new friends and take away memories of an unforgettable South Australian adventure.
