About the Composer Frank Loesser:
One of Broadway and Hollywood’s finest composers, Loesser is famous for the hit shows Guys & Dolls and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying plus a string of hit songs including ‘Baby it’s Cold Outside’.
Born in 1910 into an immigrant family in Manhattan, he was expelled from both school and university before running through a series of short term newspaper jobs. Moving to Los Angeles, he found work as a lyricist working with composers like Alfred Newman and Hoagy Carmichael. He had an early hit with ‘See What the Boys in the Back Room Will Have’, written with Friedrich Hollaender for Marlene Dietrich.
After the War he moved back to New York where he wrote Where’s Charley?, a musical version of Charley’s Aunt that opened in 1948. Two years later, Guys & Dolls won him a Tony.
Loesser’s Score:
Loesser’s score is one of the classic Broadway musicals. Its deftly crafted songs propel the drama forward while at the same time being easily adaptable as standalone hits. As such, numbers like ‘I’ll Know’, ‘Guys and Dolls’, ‘If I Were a Bell’, ‘Luck Be a Lady’ and ‘Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat’ have taken their place as a part of the Great American Songbook.
The score has its roots in jazz and the musical tradition of Gershwin, Kern and Porter, but Loesser also excels at incorporating local colour to set the show firmly in Manhattan. The show involves plenty of pastiche alongside popular genre songs. Miss Adelaide and the Hot Box Girls’ ‘A Bushel and a Peck’, for example, is a typical novelty song of the period.
‘Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat’ channels revivalist hymns and gospel; while the Havana sequence is fuelled by Latin dance rhythms.
This production is…
A new staging created specifically for the Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour stage. Director Shaun Rennie and designers Brian Thomson and Jennifer Irwin have created a larger-than-life version of Manhattan that plays with scale and spills out across the harbour.
