We begin our adventure by departing from Rome and making our way to Orvieto, a captivating hilltop town famous for its stunning cathedral and Etruscan roots. As we continue our journey, we pass through the scenic countryside en route to Pienza, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its Renaissance architecture and delicious pecorino cheese.
Next, we venture into the picturesque Val D’Orcia, where the landscapes seem to be lifted from a painting. Here, we explore the charming villages of Bagno Vignoni and San Quirico D’Orcia, soaking in the tranquil atmosphere and scenic beauty of rural Tuscany. We also visit the spectacular La Foce Gardens and the historic town of Montepulciano, renowned for its wine and panoramic views.
No visit to Tuscany is complete without indulging in its world-class wines. We enjoy a delightful wine tasting experience as we make our way to Siena, a medieval gem with its magnificent Piazza del Campo and impressive cathedral.
The journey continues through the renowned Chianti region, where we discover the medieval towers of San Gimignano and the fortified village of Monteriggioni. These ancient settlements offer a glimpse into Tuscany’s rich history and architectural heritage.
In Lucca, we wander through narrow cobblestone streets and ancient city walls, savouring the laid-back atmosphere and artistic heritage of this charming town. A cooking class awaits us, where we learn the secrets of regional cuisine.

The birthplace of St. Francis, one of Italy’s patron saints, Assisi is a historic, religious and artistic gem. Marvel at the soaring Basilica of San Francesco, begun right after Francis’ canonisation. The upper church features magnificent wall and ceiling frescoes painted by the school of Giotto; the lower church contains St. Francis’ tomb. In the Umbrian/Romanesque Cathedral of Assisi, both St. Francis and St. Clare were baptised. Stroll around the cobblestoned old town with its surviving Roman walls, viewing medieval houses and cherished small churches that hosted centuries of pilgrims.

Level of fitness required: Moderate
This journey is more challenging and designed for the more active traveller who is looking to venture off the beaten path. To fully participate in all activities, the traveller must be able to walk up to 1km on even surfaces unaided, travel by four-wheel drive vehicles along ungraded roads and walk up steps unassisted.
We strongly urge you to consider the fitness rating before selecting your preferred journey, in respect for your fellow travellers. Bill Peach Journeys reserves the right to refuse travel to any client whose fitness level is below the recommended rating.
