Allow us to reveal the visual splendour that awaits in the magnificent Kimberley located in Western Australia’s remote Far North West. For over 40 years, Bill Peach Journeys has showcased this remarkable and vast region from the air and through insightful touring. Not only will we view the incredible Purnululu (Bungle Bungle Range) from above, we will also walk amongst its awe-inspiring domes for an up close exploration of this most incredible natural formation. 

We begin our adventure in Darwin where we learn about the city’s fascinating military past and the invaluable service provided by the Royal Flying Doctors. In the untamed natural beauty of El Questro Wilderness Park, cruise Chamberlain Gorge, view sweeping landscapes and relax in the soothing waters of Emma Gorge and Zebedee Thermal Springs. In rugged Kununurra, we cruise the Ord River. One of Australia’s most stunning river systems, it is scenically beautiful and rich in wildlife and flora. From the rich red vistas of the Kimberley, we fly back to Darwin having experienced one of Australia’s last true frontiers, the heart of the Kimberley; an outback discovery that is wondrous in every way!

Day 1: Arrive Darwin

Upon arrival in Darwin, the capital of Australia’s Northern Territory and a former frontier outpost, your private transfer will take you to the Novotel Darwin. The balance of the day is at leisure to relax in your hotel offering water views or perhaps explore tropical Darwin; Smith Street Mall is only a few minutes walk away from the hotel. From ancient Aboriginal Dreamtime stories and the pioneering spirit of the early settlers, to survival stories of WWII, the bombing of Darwin and Cyclone Tracy, Darwin’s history and heritage is vast, diverse and captivating in every way. This evening, join our Journey Director and fellow travellers at a welcome dinner sunset cruise on Darwin Harbour enjoying delicious food, magnificent views and interesting commentary.

Day 2: Darwin

 

Royal Flying Doctor Service Darwin

Following breakfast, we visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service to enjoy heroic tales and learn the history of the RFDS. Tour the Darwin Military Museum and discover the city’s historical and turbulent past. Learn about the first and largest foreign attack ever mounted on Australia when more than 188 Japanese aircraft attacked Darwin’s harbour and airfield.

Day 3: Darwin - El Questro

 

After breakfast we board our private aircraft for our flight along the East Kimberley coastline. Below us passes a land of breathtaking contrasts covering billions of years in history. Comprising in total over one million square kilometres, Australia’s North West is one of the last true wilderness areas on Earth. Known for sweeping landscapes defined by rugged ranges, dramatic gorges, semi-arid savanna and a largely isolated and spectacular coastline, the Kimberley is a sight to behold. 

We arrive at the El Questro Station strip and are then transferred via 4WD to our riverside accommodation. This evening, as vivid orange and pinks that paint not just the horizon but the whole sky appear, we discover why Western Australian sunsets are rated as some of the most beautiful in the world.

Day 4: El Questro

Amid the vast and ancient landscape of Western Australia’s East Kimberley region sits the untamed natural beauty of El Questro. A destination unlike any other, El Questro offers the freedom to explore one of Australia’s last true frontiers. From deep gorges and majestic mountains to thermal springs, mud and salt-flats, rainforests and cascading waterfalls; everything the Kimberley has to offer is located across the property. We begin with a visit to Zebedee Springs, a serene oasis of thermal pools and waterfalls set in the prehistoric forest of Livistona and Pandanus palms. Unwind in the inviting surroundings and for those interested, an opportunity to enjoy a soothing soak. This afternoon, we embark on a cruise through the impressive Chamberlain Gorge. During the cruise, we discover the diverse flora and fauna, resident rock wallabies, Johnston crocodiles and the always cheeky Archer fish, which are all familiar inhabitants of the gorge. Relax on the peaceful return journey admiring the colours of the Kimberley in the towering cliffs.

Day 5: El Questro - Kununurra

Leaving the remarkable El Questro behind, we re-board our private aircraft for the flight to Kununurra. On the way, we will enjoy incredible ‘flightseeing’ over an ancient land of sweeping vistas and rugged natural wonders, a frontier of deep gorges and majestic mountains. Upon arrival, we will take a brief tour of Kununurra before transferring to our accommodation.

Day 6: Purnululu (Bungle Bungle Range)

An incredible never to be forgotten experience today as we board a scenic flight to the World Heritage-listed Purnululu National Park. Soar over the full expanse of Lake Argyle, the Ord Top Dam Wall, Lake Kununurra, and the Ord Irrigation Area. Be enthralled by the magic of the East Kimberley landscape and witness spectacular aerial views of the Bungle Bungle Range. 

Once landed in Purnululu National Park, enjoy a guided walk through the remarkable black and orange banded domes. Marvel at the stunning panoramic views of the region including the western escarpment of the Bungle Bungle Range from Kungkalanayi Lookout. Another spectacular flight returns you to Kununurra this afternoon.

Day 7: Kununurra

Start the day with a viewing of the enormous Lake Argyle and crossing of the Ord Top Dam wall where we will see the Ord Hydro-Power Station. Embark on a memorable cruise of the Ord River, marvelling at the spectacular scenery, wildlife, flora and fauna of the Kimberley region before visiting the Durack’s historic Argyle Homestead Museum.

Day 8: Kununurra - Darwin

This morning visit the Waringarri Art Gallery, a living, growing art centre celebrating the uniqueness of Miriwoong cultural identity. Bidding adieu to the Kimberley, we board our private aircraft for a flight to Darwin. On the way, we will enjoy incredible ‘flightseeing’ over an ancient land of sweeping vistas and rugged natural wonders, a frontier of deep gorges and majestic mountains. Departing the breathtaking Kimberley coast, you will fly over the glimmering emerald Timor Sea then cross over the Northern Territory coast. We check-in to our Darwin hotel once again to prepare for our farewell dinner at one of Darwin’s most renowned restaurants.

Day 9: Depart Darwin

After breakfast, we transfer to Darwin Airport where you will board your flight home. Say a fond farewell to new friends and take away memories of a wondrous Kimberley adventure.

Mode of Transport

This journey will utilise aircraft which are perfect for landing in remote destinations throughout this journey. To ensure a variety of viewing for everyone, we change seat allocation each day. The aircraft is operated by an experienced pilot and accompanied by a Journey Director. The coaches that we use for the ground component of this journey are fully air-conditioned. There will be a number of 4WD vehicles used on this journey. The journey will involve travelling over unsealed roads. We will also be utilising boats for river cruises.

Level of fitness required: Moderate

This journey is more challenging and designed for the more active traveller who is looking to venture off the beaten path. To fully participate in all activities, the traveller must be able to walk up to 1km on even surfaces unaided, travel by four-wheel-drive vehicles along ungraded roads and walk up steps unassisted.

We strongly urge you to consider the fitness rating before selecting your preferred journey, with respect for your fellow travellers. Bill Peach Journeys reserves the right to refuse travel to any client whose fitness level is below the recommended rating.
